As the third President of the United States, a Founding Father of America, and primary author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson kept himself busy. Entertaining at the White House came with the job of course, and though we may never know each meal the President shared with fellow friends and patriots, the fine china dinner was served on remains a totem of the era — and we are excited to have in our current auction a very rare piece of this china from Jefferson’s china service.
Said Kennedy once at a White House dinner honoring Nobel Prize Winners in 1962, “I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered at the White House – with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.”
The beautiful china soup plate is made of white Chinese porcelain is painted blue with gilt accents. Features a shallow bowl with gilt ”J” at center, inside a shield that bears a knight’s head decoration.
The plate is from the From the Raleigh DeGeer Amyx Collection — He is an renowned and avid collector of Presidential, Americana, military, sports, NASA, and Olympic artifacts, including gold, silver, and bronze winners medals presented to athletes.
The China Room of the White House displays a similar piece of china today. Until the late 19th century, White House furnishings, including the china services, were sold off at auction to supplement funds for new furnishings.
