William Howard Taft typed letter signed during Word War I, just days after Taft's own son left to fight in the war. Upon his personal stationery, Taft writes his friend Gus Karger on 15 January 1918 about politics and the suffrage movement (''I hope they will defeat the suffrage amendment in the Senate''), before penning a lengthy autograph note signed with touching content about his son Charles Taft. Autograph note signed reads in part, ''...Wm H Taft / Charlie sailed with his regiment Thursday morning the 10th - I learn that his vessel was the Olympian - Maria Herron my wife's sister sailed today to take her place as canteen woman in the Y.M.C.A. I shall be anxious for 'those in peril on the sea' for some time.'' Two page letter on two sheets measures 8'' x 10.5''. Some discoloration to lower right, and toning to pages. Very good condition. Accompanied by a copy of Karger's original letter to Taft, paper clipped with Taft's letter.
