William Shatner handwritten signed recollection on what he thought of James Doohan and recommending him for the role of ''Scotty'' in ''Star Trek''. Written on Shatner's personal stationery, it reads in full, ''Jimmy Doohan was born and bred and worked in Canada - for that matter, so was I. I worked with him in Canada but I've forgotten on what - but I was certainly aware of his talent. When it came time to cast Scotty in Star Trek, I mentioned this terrific actor I knew in Canada who had a talent with accent - Roddenberry got in contact with him and subsequently hired him. What a neat job he did with the part - Getting somebody a job is a responsible thing - like recommending an investment - if if doesn't work out it's your fault - but there was Jimmy doing his usual professional work - I understand he became very good friends with Roddenberry and that too was cool. As he got older, he became a little more forgetful as the pitfalls of age assailed him. I recently saw some pictures of him as a member of the Canadian armed forces, a mere boy - but totally recognizable as the redoubtable Jimmy Doohan. / William Shatner''.
