First edition of William Bligh's account of the HMS Bounty mutiny, ''A Voyage to the South Sea''. London: George Nicol, 1792. Published only three years after the mutiny, this first edition is Bligh's first account of the expedition apart from an unofficial telling when he arrived back in England in early 1790 to a hero's welcome. Book contains all seven engraved maps and illustrations, including five fold-outs. Bound in sumptuous contemporary navy blue leather boards with gilt accenting, ribbed spine and a custom title, ''Bligh's South Sea Voyage''. Bound book measures 10'' x 12.5'' and runs 264pp. Private library label to front pastedown, lacking frontispiece portrait of Bligh, pencil writing to a few pages and tape to one of the fold-out maps. Overall very good condition. An essential book in the Bligh and HMS Bounty narrative.
