Colonel Stephen Rochefontaine autograph letter signed, datelined West Point, 27 December 1796. As Chief of Engineers of the U.S. Army Corps, Rochefontaine transformed West Point from Revolutionary War fortress to military academy, only to see it destroyed by fire in March 1796, before its ultimate construction in 1802. Here, Rochefontaine writes to Congressman Henry Glen of New York asking him to forward some letters, signing ''Step: Rochefontaine''. Single 8'' x 10'' letter on card style stationery. Toning and a 1'' tear to left side. Very good condition.
