Rare universal self-winding stock ticker manufactured by Thomas Edison, with his engraved stamp ''M'F'D. BY / T.A. EDISON, INC.'' and serial number of 10464. Circa 1925, Edison's factory manufactured some 16,000 of the universal stock tickers between 1915-1929, with estimates of only 250 still extant.
Edison's patent improvement upon the existing self-winding stock ticker revolutionized Wall Street by synchronizing stock prices across the exchange companies, allowing for the meteoric rise of the NYSE in the early 20th century. It was first designed by Edison for a subsidiary of Western Union, and then manufactured by his own company, of which this is an example. While not the earliest self-winding stock ticker, this model is preferred by collectors as it originates from Edison's factory.
Ticker machine is made of brass, with a cast iron base and still with the ink box and glass dome, which are missing on most models. Machine measures approximately 7.5'' in diameter across the base and 11'' tall. Expected wear, overall in very good condition.
