Scarce Louis Daguerre autograph letter signed, dated simply 16 May. Daguerre writes in French to a Monsieur Courtin of the L'Académie royale de Musique, with French transcription included. Unbelievably, after Daguerre invented the daguerreotype, the earliest type of photography, he was unable to persuade private investors of its commercial viability. Once news spread of the invention, however, it was hailed as miraculous and bought by the French government in 1839, who later that year gave it to the rest of the world as a gift. Letter measures 5.75'' x 8.25''. Light toning and ink blot to part of signature, otherwise near fine with bold writing. From the collection of Elsie and Philip Sang, and thereafter Malcolm Forbes.
