A grim reminder of the slave trade along the Middle Passage route in the 18th century, iron shackles with two sets of loops to hold two individuals side by side, with a loop at one end to allow for a chain to pass through, connecting multiple individuals in restraint. Shackles measure 23'' long with loops measuring approximately 3.75'', likely used to shackle two women or children based on the size. With a COA from University Archives and originally from the collection of Ibrahim Berthe, noted long-time African Antiquities dealer.
