Scare first edition, first printing of ''Persepolis Illustrata'', one of only five copies at auction since 1976. London: S. Harding, 1739. Authored and drawn by an anonymous individual, ''Persepolis Illustrata'' depicts the ruins of the Persepolis, the ancient Persian city vibrant during the 500 BC era and destroyed by Alexander the Great. Complete in 21 copper plates, with the first eight plates in text, volume includes nine double page plates, three of which are folding, and four single page plates. Illustrations are detailed and fascinating, depicting the tomb of Darius the Great and other Persian Kings, ruins of the Palace and other notable buildings, hieroglyphics and architectural carvings, along with social views. Measures 9.625'' x 14.625''. Rebound in mottled calf with front board detached. First blank leave detached, foxing throughout. Tape repair to verso of Plate I, two-inch closed tear at fold of Plate IV, some creasing to Plate VI affecting visibility and closed tear along lower seam of Plate IX. A few small closed tears to margins. Overall a very good copy with flaws not distracting from presentation. From the estate of Prof. Kaikhosrov D.
