United States 48-star flag made for the Presidential limousine during the Dwight D. Eisenhower administration. The 48-star flag, representing Arizona's entry into the Union, was used from the beginning of Eisenhower's term until 4 July 1959 when the 49-star flag, representing Alaska's entry, replaced it. Flag is made of brightly colored wool bunting, measuring 28'' x 20.25'' including yellow fringe, and hemmed to create the hoist, where two leather tabs at each end are sewn so that the flag could be attached to the flagpole. This flag however was an extra never used on the Presidential limousine and remains in fine condition. When Alaska was added, it was returned to the Flag Mission of the Quartermaster General's Clothing & Textile Material Division, where it was acquired by Ludwell B. Pruett, who worked in the Flag Mission from 1958-61, and was responsible for all flags originating from the U.S. Army Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot, the facility responsible for producing all White House flags and military flags. Pruett would continue to work in the Flag Mission until 1961, when flag procurement was transferred to the Department of Defense. With an LOA from the family of Ludwell Pruett, and with copies of documents from Pruett's employment with the Quartermaster General.
