Rare Franklin D. Roosevelt signed paycheck from the U.S. Treasury, dated 29 April 1933 only a month after he assumed office. Paycheck is for $937.50, paid to ''Franklin D Roosevelt President of the United States / The White House / Washington D C'', endorsed by him on the verso in fountain pen, ''Franklin D. Roosevelt''.
This check has an interesting history and is the first of its kind: Upon taking office, Roosevelt immediately signed the Economy Act of 1933 on 20 March 1933, which automatically cut employee pay by 15%, equaling $937.50 for FDR's monthly salary. However, per the U.S. Constitution, Congress lacked the authority to garnish a President's paycheck, causing the Treasury to reimburse Roosevelt for this amount. Roosevelt would go on to voluntarily relinquish this portion of his salary in solidarity with the American people during the Great Depression.
