Piece of Executive Mansion wood from the office in which President Abraham Lincoln signed his historic Emancipation Proclamation on 1 January 1863, abolishing slavery. Patriotic certificate has the piece of wood attached vertically through center, with a ribbon holding it in place. Inscription in ornate calligraphy reads: "White House Washington, D.C. June 1912 / A piece of wood from the White House in the room where President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and used as a private office by the Presidents since Jefferson's time. Presented to Mr. H.E. Bates as a souvenir by his friend Lt. Col. Wm. M. Palmer, staff of the late Major Genl. Wm. J. Sewell." Wood measures approximately 8". Letter is mounted, else near fine condition.
