Unique lot of original artwork by Sheldon Mayer for ''Sugar and Spike'', Mayer's comic series depicting the antics of two children who speak to each other in baby talk indecipherable to adults. Mayer created this colorful artwork, circa 1958, for a 35mm animated film of ''Sugar and Spike'', and is comprised of 26 panels with most panels each consisting of 4-5 frames. The story told through the numbered frames (starting at 1 and ending at 111) first show Sugar and Spike alone in their homes - not quite meshing with their adult caretakers, then meeting each other and bonding through mischievous antics like destroying pies in the kitchen, and then separately being punished. The pair can't bear to be apart, however, and the conclusion shows Spike escaping from his crib to be with Sugar; although he and Sugar are punished by being put in the corner, they don't care as long as they're together. Panels vary slightly in size, with most measuring 22.375'' x 4.625''. The first panel has heavy soiling, and last there panels have some paper loss to left side, but most of the other panels are well-preserved, overall in very good plus condition. From the Sheldon Mayer estate.
