37 volume set of ''The Works of Mark Twain'', signed by Twain on the flyleaf of the first volume with both his given name and famous pseudonym: ''S.L. Clemens / Mark Twain''. This limited edition is #996 of 1,024 copies, complete in 37 volumes with the rare two ''Autobiography'' volumes published in 1925. New York: Gabriel Wells, 1922-25 published after Twain's death; Twain signed the pages in 1906 prior to its publication, and all signed pages were then tipped into volume I of each set. Twain biographer Albert Bigelow Paine also signs volume I, on a separate flyleaf. Volumes each measure 6'' x 9''. Most volumes are in very good plus condition, with private library labels to front pastedown of each volume, and foxing to signature page of volume I. Paper label torn or detached from volumes XIII, XXXVI and XXXVII. Hinges of volumes I, XII, XIII, and XXXVII starting to separate. Some expected toning to labels and scuffing to boards. Entire set is in very good condition overall.
