Margot Einstein lot of two autograph letters signed, written in German to Walter Kaufmann, a composer and conductor who was also friends with Margot's stepfather, Albert Einstein. Margot, for her part, was also very close to Albert, with the latter writing to Elsa, Margot's mother, ''I love [Margot] as much as if she were my own daughter, perhaps even more so, since who knows what kind of brat she would have become [had I fathered her].''
First letter is written from Berlin in 1933 before the Einstein family moved to Princeton, where the second letter, dated 1938, originates. Like the Einsteins, Walter Kaufmann left Germany in the mid-1930s, residing in India for 12 years before immigrating to the United States. Letters are untranslated, but likely with World War II content and mentioning the difficulties that Kaufman, as a Jewish man, was experiencing in Germany given the dates. Signed ''Margot'' and ''M.E.'' respectively. Berlin letter runs four pages on two sheets measuring 8.5'' x 11''. Princeton letter runs two pages on a single sheet measuring 5.75'' x 9''. Creasing and chipping along sides of 1933 letter, overall very good condition.
