Marcel Proust autograph letter signed spanning four pages, circa July 1917. Proust writes in French to Max Daireaux, a friend who he met in 1908 in Cabourg, France, the inspiration for the resort town of Balbec in Proust's novel ''In Search of Lost Time''. Proust congratulates his Franco-Argentinian friend on a manuscript he had published, in full, ''Dear friend / My suffering eyes prevent me from writing. But I have to thank and warmly congratulate you. Uniting France and Latin America within you, you have truly brought them together in your verses like no one else could have; for in so many words that for us, alas, are only words, you have made shine the colors that are semi-native to you. Even in the softer shades, France's question to Colombia is exquisite. / Dear friend, I am happy, it is lovely that these well-deserved successes add their noble radiance to your mourning. And I am sure that your mother, even in her grief, nonetheless feels a certain pride because of it, which you must be happy to have given her. / Yours from my heart / Marcel Proust''. Four page letter is written in black ink on bifolium stationery measuring 4.5'' x 7'' as folded. Letter has been documented in Kolb's archive of Proust letters, Vol. XVI, number 94. Light toning, folds and a small ink spot on page three; overall very good to near fine condition with a large, bold signature.
