1940 Presidential dark horse nominee Wendell Willkie typed letter signed. Dated 5 August 1940, a month after the convention, Willkie writes, ''...I am terribly sorry not to have been able at an earlier date to thank you for your very kind letter...congratulating me on my nomination...'' The 1940 Republican convention, where Willkie surged ahead of Taft in the sixth ballot amidst fears of growing Nazi power, is considered the most dramatic nomination in convention history. 7.25'' x 10.5'' letter is on Willkie's personal stationery. Very good.
