Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed from Europe during WWII. Very stirring letter dated 20 June [1943] reads in full: ''Darling: This won't be much of a note. In fact it is nothing but an 'Escape' on my part because I'm almost at my wits end in trying to solve some of these knotty problems. When I get driven to a certain point my natural reaction is to scribble something to you. Sometimes it helps clarify things in my mind. Yesterday I had a letter from Johnnie; also one from Peggy Eisenhower, who has just graduated from a school in Denver. Both letters were refreshing and I must answer when I can properly organize my thoughts in their direction. This month I received a teletype saying you had received the May 3 checks. I'll send you another very quickly, but I'm getting low on money and must hang on to some myself now. But such things seem unimportant these days + I hear the gov't, starting July 1, is to withhold 20% of our pay. I don't care - I'm in favor of lower salaries throughout our whole economic structure and absolute price control, with every man's job looked upon as that of a soldier's. The war is serious - we'll never preserve our accustomed ways of living in the U.S. - free speech - press - and right to worship - unless we all turn in now and fight and work!! Lots of love - always. If anything should ever happen to me in this war, please never forget; I love you and you only. Ike''. An intersting conclusion as Eisenhower allegedly fell in love with with his female driver, Kay Summersby, while serving in Europe during the war. 2pp. letter written in pencil upon ruled stationery measures 8'' x 10.5''. Near fine.
