Documents from the whaling bark, Eugenia, which traveled under master William Cottie from New Bedford, Massachusetts to the island of Mauritius in November 1855. Notarized documents, all dated 1858 and signed by the ship's officers, include a detailed description of damage to the boat for insurance purposes. A five-page document describes in detail the storm causing the damage. In it, the crew declares, ''...every damage, loss or detriment which hath arisen or been sustained by their said Barque the 'Eugenia', or her Cargo, is to be entirely ascribed to the Circumstances herein before set forth and did not in any manner arise from any insufficiency in their said vessel, or from any want of skill or care in them...'' The final document reads in part, ''...the vessel being now tight & Staunch, thoroughly refitted, and ready for sea, is...fit to proceed to any part of the world...'' Eight 8.25'' x 13.25'' sheets, some card style, written front and verso are enclosed in an envelope with intact notary and Supreme Court seals of Mauritius, bound with a single ribbon. Minor edge wear and soiling, else near fine condition.
