Original oil painting for the creation of an American Red Cross poster during World War I. This oil on paper board references the charity's popular fictionalized nurse character created by artist Alonzo Foringer: ''Our Greatest Mother''. Green lettering upon a hunter green background reads: ''In famine - In pestilence / In war - In devastation''. It is not known whether this painting became part of a final poster print, or if it is an unpublished draft. A very similar piece became part of a WWI Red Cross poster featuring a painting of the ''Greatest Mother'' by Cornelius Hicks. Heavy paper board banner measures 36'' x 12''. Chipping to green lettering reveals earlier coat of red paint, suggesting design was reworked while in progress. Some wear to edges and crackling to lettering, else near fine.
