''Harper's Weekly / A Journal of Civilization'' hardcover compilation for 20 April 1861 to 28 December 1861. Harper & Brothers: New York: 1861. Volume begins with news of the 12 April attack on Ft. Sumter, igniting the Civil War. Newly sworn in President Abraham Lincoln calls for 75,000 militia to fight the seceded states. Well known artists, such as Winslow Homer and Thomas Nast, were regular contributors. Issues include eyewitness sketches of battles in Virginia, including Manassas, and a full page portrait of Commander-in-Chief Winfield Scott. Homer's two-page ''A Bivouac on the Potomac'' showing Union soldiers relaxing around a campfire appears in the Christmas issue. Chapter-long installments of Charles Dickens' novel, ''Great Expectations,'' are also featured. 1861 issues of ''Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper'' are also bound into the volume. Some loss of leather to board corners and spine, and light toning. Measures 11.5'' x 16.25''. Overall in very good condition.
