Secretary of State John Hay signs his ''William McKinley Memorial Address,'' published by Thomas Y. Crowell & Co.: New York: 1902. Hay inscribes the front free endpaper: ''To E J Babcock / with regards of / John Hay'' in black ink. Hay delivered the eloquent eulogy to President McKinley contained in these pages on 27 February 1902. In part, ''...It is not easy to give to those of a later generation any clear idea of that extraordinary spiritual awakening which passed over the country at the first red signal fires of the Civil War. It was not our earliest apocalypse: a hundred years before the nation had been revealed to itself, when after a long discussion and much searching of heart the people of the colonies had resolved that to live without liberty was worse than to die...'' Hay was Abraham Lincoln's personal secretary as well as Secretary of State under McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Book runs 27pp. and measures 5'' x 7.25''. Bound in white leather boards with gilt lettering and laurel design. Soiling to boards and chipping to spine edges. Very good.
