James Buchanan partially printed 1846 invitation to "Mrs. Madison", likely the former First Lady who returned to Washington D.C. after James Madison passed. The Secretary of State invites her to join him at Carusi's Saloon, a popular venue for theatrical performances and balls, and the site of Buchanan's annual grand ball, held in January of this year. The invitation reads in full, "Mr. Buchanan requests the honor of Mrs. Madison's Company on Friday evening, the 23d January [1846] at 8 o'clock at Carusi's Saloon". Light foxing, tape residue and pencil notations to 4.25" x 3" card. Very good condition.
