Interesting and rare Civil War document signed by Confederate General George E. Pickett as Colonel of the Rappahannock Line in December 1861. Less than two years later on 3 July 1863, Pickett would lead ''Pickett's Charge'' during the Battle of Gettysburg, a desperate but valorous infantry assault that would turn the tide in favor of the Union for the rest of the war.
In this document, Pickett endorses expenses that, according to Colonel Dabney H. Maury, A.A.G., ''seem a little extravagant''. Dated 16 December 1861, Maury writes, These accounts were made before I assumed command of this department - I know nothing of them except the signatures which I believe to be genuine - Is my approval necessary under the circumstances? Some of these seem a little extravagant'', after which Pickett signs, ''GE Pickett / Col P.A.C.S. / Comg''. Document measures 7.875'' x 4.5'', shorn along top edge with details of expenses no longer present, although calculations in pencil appears on verso. Folds and archival tape to verso, overall in very good condition.
