Pierre-Auguste Renoir signed print of a study for his famous 1885 painting ''Maternite'', showing an infant on the breast of his mother, based on Renoir's own first-born son and Renoir's partner Aline. Signed ''Renoir'' underneath the image. This signed print served as the basis for authenticating ''Maternite'' by Renoir's art dealer, Ambrose Vollard, who had all Renoir's artworks catalogued with his signature to avoid authenticity disputes. Vollard enlisted the Mayor of Cagnes, France (now called Cagnes-sur-Mer) to serve as witness, who also signs underneath the mayor's stamp with his handwritten notation reading, ''Seen in order to authenticate the signature of Pierre Auguste Renoir, painter, witnessed January 9, 1909.'' Signed print measures 6.25'' x 11'', mounted to mat board measuring 9'' x 11.5''. Some discoloration to lower edge of print, else near fine. Accompanied by the 2013 catalog of PADA dealer Schulson Autographs, who features this lot with its photo on pages 30-31.
