Ernest Hemingway holograph check signed, dated 20 February 1929 just months before his breakthrough novel ''A Farewell to Arms'' was published. Completed entirely in Hemingway's hand, check to his sister Madelaine is for $20.00, signed ''Ernest M. Hemingway''. Check is partially affixed to a letter by Mary Hemingway on her personal stationery stating that ''Ernest never 'worked hard' at anything other than his actual work - at this typewriter. The rest of it - the fishing...the hunting, the bullfights were play...'' Also accompanied by an autograph letter signed by Mary Hemingway regarding the history of the check. Check measures 6.25'' x 2.75''. Discreet cancellation holes affecting beginning of signature, overall very good plus condition with exceptionally bold handwriting.
