Rare Certificate of Merit, signed by James K. Polk President and awarded to Patrick Keif for his distinguished service at the Battle of Cerro Gordo during the Mexican-American War. Now discontinued, the Certificate of Merit was a rare military honor given to non-officers, equivalent to a Congressional Medal of Honor but with the added benefit of $2 additional pay per month. A Private in the 2nd Regiment of Dragoons, Keif was recommended by his commanding officer, Colonel W. S. Harney. Signed ''James K. Polk'' on 25 November 1848, countersigned by Secretary of War William L. Marcy. Vellum document measures 16.25'' x 9.75''. Folds and uniform block of toning, otherwise pristine and overall in near fine condition.
