James W. Marshall signed card, stating that Marshall was the Discoverer of Gold in California. Marshall earned this distinction on 19 January 1848 when he found gold in the California River while working at the Old Sutter Mill. What resulted was the Gold Rush, the greatest speculative migration in U.S. history. Card measures 5.25'' x 2.875'', penned by Marshall in black fountain pen. Card is affixed to mat also displaying a photo postcard to a total size of 8.5'' x 11''. Minor toning, overall very good to near fine.
