Apollo 15 space flown flag of Bhutan, here a vivid orange and red design featuring a white dragon at center. Flag measures 6'' x 4'', matted with a notarized statement signed by Apollo 15 astronaut James Irwin, dated 5 December 1989. Statement certifies the flag's flown status, also matted with an Apollo 15 mission patch and a photo from the mission. Entire display measures 23.5'' x 19''. Near fine condition. Lot also includes a letter signed by Irwin's widow, apologizing to the country of Bhutan for the slightly incorrect design of the flag. Consigned by the Irwin estate.
Flag originates from the Apollo 15 project with the United Nations. As U.N. Ambassadors of Goodwill, the Apollo 15 astronauts carried flags of all the member nations, which were then presented to the U.N. Since the flag of Bhutan was slightly incorrect in its design, it wasn't presented and is now available for private ownership.
