Lot of three large pieces of artwork owned by the comic artist Frank Thorne, including original artwork by Jon Mayes, reproducing his cover art for the first issue of ''Famous Funnies'' #1, published in 1934. Artwork rendered in ink measures 16'' x 20'' on artist board, signed by Mayes at lower right. ''Famous Funnies'' was the very first comic book sold to the public through newsstand distribution, launching the Golden Age of Comic Books, and its historic significance can't be overestimated. Though not the actual artwork that was published in issue #1, Mayes almost exactly imitates the published work here. Light uniform toning, and foxing at edges, overall very good plus condition.
Other artwork includes an ink and gouache panel from ''The Yellow Kid'', likely reproduced by Richard F. Outcault, unsigned, on board measuring 20'' x 16'', a reproduction of the original circa 1897. Light discoloration, overall very good plus condition. Lastly, an ink and watercolor panel of ''And Her Name Was Maud'', likely by Frederick Burr Opper, unsigned, on board measuring 20'' x 16'', likely a reproduction of the original circa 1905. Light discoloration and foxing at edges, overall very good condition.
