Rare document signed by George Armstrong Custer as Brevet Major General of the 7th Cavalry during the American Indian Wars in 1869, here recommending an ''Osage Warrior'' who helped U.S. troops during the critical Battle of Washita River.
Datelined 29 March 1869 from ''Head Quarters of Troops / Operating South of the Arkansas / Camp Supply Ind. Terr.'', document reads in part, ''The bearer, Trotter (Ses-sa is an Osage Warrior, He accompanied my command on the late winter's campaign and marches, and participated in the battle of the 'Washita'. / I believe him to be a good Indian, and a valuable scout and trailer.'' Signed ''GA Custer'', with Custer also filing in the name of ''Trotter (Ses-sa''.
The controversial Battle of Washita River was the first important battle won by federal forces during the Indian Wars, resulting in a large portion of the Southern Cheyenne forced onto reservations. Document measures approximately 8'' x 9.875'', backed with japan tissue. Slight separation along folds, some fading to writing and light soiling. Overall in very good condition.
