Beautifully rendered fore-edge painting on ''The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments'', featuring a map of New England and a portrait of John Smith. London: Published for John Reeves, Esq. (a patentee for the King's Printer), 1807. Concealed by gilt, fore-edge painting is revealed when pages are fanned, a technique invented by the bookbinder for King Charles II, who reportedly grew tired of his books not being returned to his library, and sought a way to secretly identify them in his friends' collections. Bound in black morocco with gilt embellishments. Measures 5.875'' x 6.375''. Light wear and foxing, overall in very good condition.
