Stunning lithograph by George Catlin with hand-coloring, from the 1845 edition of ''North American Indian Portfolio. Hunting Scenes and Amusements of the Rocky Mountains and Prairies of America''. New York: James Ackerman, 1845. The Ackerman edition is the rarest publication of Catlin's artwork of Native-American tribes, which are noted for their realistic depictions and artistic beauty.

Catlin visited with tribes for most of the 1830s, producing a series of 25 plates for the Portfolio; this lithograph, ''Buffalo Hunt, Chase, No. 6'' is one of the most popular in the series. Catlin's depiction of the Native-American was as ''an honest, hospitable, faithful, brave, warlike, cruel, revengeful, relentless, - yet honourable, contemplative and religious being.'' He was so taken with their culture, that he vowed ''nothing short of the loss of my life shall prevent me from visiting their country and becoming their historian.''

Visible portion of lithograph measures 19'' x 14'', framed to 25.875'' x 21.25''. Smoothed folds, minor creasing and discoloration. Not examined out of frame, appears in very good plus condition.
