Important newspaper in the history of the Texas oil industry, announcing the eruption of Spindletop a day earlier, and a week before the well would be capped. The story appears in the ''Houston Daily Post'' on 11 January 1901 on page three, belying the importance of the event, with the headline, ''OIL STRUCK NEAR BEAUMONT'' and the subhead, ''A Stream of Petroleum Shot Into the Air for a Hundred Feet''. Coverage continues, ''About three miles south of the city there is spouting an oil well the equal of which can not be seen elsewhere in the United States and probably in the world...Oil then gushed up like a waterspout at sea...Many were incredulous...Captain Lucas says 5000 barrels per day would be exceedingly low...an era has dawned upon the Queen of the Neches such as has never before been experienced by any Southern city...A number of new wells will be started just as soon as the machinery can be secured...'' The discovery of oil in Texas coincided with advances in automobile technology, a perfect pairing that advanced the Machine Age and led to United States hegemony in the 20th century. Complete 14-page newspaper measures 16.75'' x 21.125''. Toning, a few small holes, small sticker to front page, and irregular left edge with a few edge tears. Overall very good condition, displaying well.
