Alberto Giacometti autograph letter signed, dated 23 September 1931 during Giacometti's Surrealist period. Here, the famed sculptor writes an amusing letter about his work process, coming to the conclusion that his work is ''probably not nothing''. Composed in black fountain pen to his childhood friend Alice Hirschfeld, Giacometti writes from his familial home in Maloja, Switzerland, translated from French in full,

''Dear Alice / Thank you for your kind letter, I was happy to hear news from you. / We are leaving tomorrow and I'm thinking of probably stopping in Zurich, where I'll be arriving at 8:30, I think. / I will call you when I arrive and I hope to see you. / Here it's windy, icy, sunny, cloudy, a little snow, it's like November, or more like October, and very beautiful. / I'm working, or rather, I'm hardly working at all, it would be difficult for me to say what I'm doing, but probably not nothing. / Now I'm going to the post office. / See you soon, maybe tomorrow. / Alberto''.

Alberto's sister Ottilia then adds, ''Dear Alice - My most cordial greetings. How is Madeline? Unfortunately, I did not find anything at Madame Nagel's, I would like to have a couple things in Zurich, but I'm afraid it will be difficult this year. Around October 15 I will also come to Z, but I think you will be in Italy. I will nonetheless try to call you. / Best wishes Ottilia''. Single page letter measures 8.25'' x 10.75''. Folds, else near fine condition.
