Charles Darwin autograph letter signed, dated 31 May 1863, shortly after the publication of ''Fertilisation of Orchids'', Darwin's follow-up to ''On the Origin of Species''. Darwin here writes to his land agent John Higgins, regarding rent collected from Darwin's farm at Beesby. On his embossed letterhead from Down, Bromley, letter reads in full, ''My dear Sir / I beg leave to acknowledge & thank you for the payment of the balance of 235:7:9 to my account at the Union Bank. / I am much obliged for your never-failing care for my interest in regard to Besb [Beesby Farm] & remain / My dear sir / Yrs vy faithfully / Ch. Darwin''. Single page letter on single sheet measures 5'' x 8''. Folds, light toning and irregular left edge. Darwin purposely signs over a duty stamp at conclusion of letter. Very good plus condition.
