Hunter S. Thompson letter signed with additional autograph note, written during his time in Big Sur on 1 December 1960. Thompson writes to his friend Paul Semonin with humorous content about their mutual friends, and also about life in Big Sur, with some hand-corrections throughout. He begins by quoting a friend, ''...I quote from McGarr, who is headed for either a dull and petrified solvency, or a terrible fall: 'We have taken an apartment on E. 95th st...We have decided to furnish our four rooms in American colonial...I know you will waste no time in hurling the appelation of 'phoney' at me...I intend to keep this one place inviolate from the incursions of passing bands of human garbage and otherwise time-wasting influences'...''

Thompson then writes in his own words, ''I presume that, by 'human garbage,' he means that segment of the un-washed masses prone to art, writing and other 'time-wasting' devices.

Bug Sur was, as you say, 'an unusually successful leech' until three days ago when Sandy arrived. Since then, the patron queer has taken to sulking and I fear a general upheaval in the near future. The patron, despite protests to the contrary, apparenty [sic] harbored thoughts of seducing me with kindness, and Sandy came as a rude shock. I am still after that $3.04 an hour job, but the outlook is not bright. Perhaps, in due time, it will be back to SF and put Sandy to work. Will advise when things break. In the meantime, writing goes well. Am sending tomorrow a S.S. [short story] based on our ride down the Calif. coast with the couple from Louisville...Pompously, [signed] H''.

Thompson then continues with an autograph note on the verso, ''letter from C. Dibbles says she's living now in that 'beat' hotel she was visiting regularly as of her last letter. Among her 'good friends' are G. Corso & William Burroughs. Corso, she says, is writing a novel called 'Fuck.' Her job fell through & she is wondering now about money''. Thompson then draws a Jewish star. Single page measures 8.5'' x 11''. Some toning and damp stain to lower left. Very good condition.
