Very rare photo album comprising 110 silver gelatin photos of the Battle of Shanghai and its aftermath, entitled ''The Sino-Japanese Hostilities 1937 / Shanghai'' by the An Fong photography studio. Complete photo album of all 110 photos is one of only a handful extant, produced in 1937 as both a war chronicle and effective device to garner international support for China in the Second Sino-Japanese War. Five of the 110 photos are in dramatic red and black, showing the burning of Shanghai. Other photos show military ships in the harbor, Japanese soldiers, bomb victims in hospitals, General Chiang Kai Shek and other military leaders, individuals killed, Chinese defenders, and the destruction of the city itself. A printed Index describing each photo is attached to the first leaf of the photo album, signed in ink by John Varga, who appears to have acquired the album in 1939 while serving as a seaman on the SS President Hayes. Most photos measure approximately 3.375'' x 2.25'', with 2-4 affixed to each leaf, and with the last red and black panoramic view measuring 7.875'' x 3''. Photo album, bound with string, measures 9.375'' x 6.5''. Some wear to album, with small amount of loss to front board, photos remain near fine. Rarely found complete with all 110 photos present.
