Franklin D. Roosevelt autograph letter signed, dated only ''Tuesday'' from Hyde Park, but likely from 1927, as FDR writes about hiring Irvin McDuffie, his long-time valet who first worked for Roosevelt at Warm Springs in 1927. Roosevelt writes to Helena Mahoney, his personal physical therapist and also the head therapist at Warm Springs, who helped design the rehabilitation program when the center opened in 1926. The center is still new at this time, with Roosevelt writing after what seems to have been a precarious few weeks. Letter reads in full,
''Dear Hony - You don't know what a comfort it is to me to know that the child is in your care & two, you were a bulwark of strength & help [in] those bad days last week - No wire from W.S. today except a good report from Goode - I think you'd better wire me to Poughkeepsie on Friday and Sunday - I will probably stay here till Monday then go to N.Y. & then off to Warm Springs as soon as I can get away - Be sure to let me know if there is anything I can bring or send for any of you - By the way - you need not pay [Irvin] McDuffie till I get down - I would rather pay him twice a month - I do so hope the nightmares have stopped - write me fully / as ever / F.D.R.'' Two page letter measures 6'' x 7'' on Warm Springs stationery, crossed out by FDR with ''Hyde Park'' written in its place. Single fold and light uniform toning, otherwise near fine condition.
