Commemorative medal flown on Apollo 8, the first manned mission to orbit the moon. Medal was given to NASA engineer Donald E. Holkan, and is accompanied by NASA certificate reading in part, ''...It seemed to us that there should be some way of providing those who worked in the program some symbol of their efforts. We carried on the first manned lunar flight a small piece of aluminum...melted down and incorporated into the metal used in making this commemorative medallion...'' Medal measures 1.5'' in diameter and certificate measures 8'' x 10''. Medal has detached from its position on the certificate, otherwise near fine condition.
