Hunter S. Thompson typed letter signed boldly with his initials ''HST''. Dated ''Monday'', Thompson writes to his childhood friend Paul Semonin who identifies the letter as written on 18 January 1960 when Thompson was living in San Juan. Full of Thompson's power-packed prose, letter reads in part, ''Dear Bullroar: / Lightning-quick Thompsonesque coup shatters dwelling barrier! Beach house acquired; move in this weekend. And Jack, when I say this place is small, I mean it's about the size of a toad's crotch in a freezing rain...But man, the whole goddamned Atlantic Ocean is my front yard! My front door is about twenty sand-yards from the water. / I have no room, money, or even the faintest idea of what I'm doing. All I know is that the sun shines, the rum flows, and I'm getting paid for about two hours' work a week. I see Kramer once a week -- editorial meeting on Saturday morning -- and the rest of the time I just mumble around in the sun, drinking, leering, and making contracts involving vast cash outlays. So far I've come upon nothing that might involve a cash inlay -- but that too shall come to pass. Yes. Of course. / No word yet on the novel. This know-nothing existence is doing something to my bowells. And on top of that, I've contracted dandruff, rummism, and the jungle rot. Maybe this is the end...Greedily, [signed] HST''. A photograph of Thompson's small dwelling is shown in ''Gonzo'', page 62. Single page measures 8.5'' x 11''. Paperclip discoloration at upper left, small chips to edges and uniform toning, overall very good condition.
