Dr. Richard von Volkmann handwritten notes and sketches from a lecture he gave in 1888 on orthopedic medicine. Considered the father of orthopedic surgery, von Volkmann here writes about Anchylosis, an abnormal stiffening of a joint due to fusion of the bones. He writes in German alongside his 8 sketches, one of which measures approximately 5.75'' x 3.5'' showing the tibia and femur bones connected at the knee joint underneath the heading ''Anchylosis - Increase of patella in flexion position''. On one page, six sketches appear below the heading ''Elongation of the Femoral Condyles'' and then von Volkmann's notes, ''Already shown in schematic wood sections in the Berlinder clinical week-paper in a work on the treatment of the knee joint anchylosis by simple osteotomy above or under the knee joint, or by double osteotomy, at the same time above and below the knee joint.'' Four sketches follow: ''Osteotomy above the knee'', ''Osteotomy below the knee'' and ''Osteotomy above and below the knee''. His notes continue, ''Ratios of the knee joint in knee joint anchylosis of individuals which grow strongly afterwards. Hypertrophic elongation of the femoral condyles as a result of a lack of articular pain.'' Two sketches then appear followed by, ''will initially be held back by untrained persons for the very ordinary luxatio or subluxatio. The ligg. lateralia which, to a certain extent, form the radius sector are now much too short. If the breakage is now carried out by force, then either / 1.) a total dislocation / 2.) or favorable case (s) with low elongation the femoral condyles, which are softened by loss...(atrophic, lipomarian) are infused, squeezed together. Then the tibia and the femur could be placed in a straight position (a kind of indentation (?) or a 'kink'.'' Four pages of notes and sketches measure 8.25'' x 13'' on two sheets. Folds, and block of uniform toning from previous framing. Overall in very good plus condition. Previously published in the ''Janus'' periodical, nos. 43, 324 and 325.
