Hunter S. Thompson autograph letter signed from January 1962, writing from Louisville, Kentucky to his friend Paul Semonin on the eve of Thompson's departure for New York. Hunter is despondent in his letter, having hit a wall in writing ''The Rum Diary'': ''...Novel exploded, Agar [his dog] back to orig. owners, guns unsold, nothing written...lowest ebb since SF - ugly...'' Nonetheless, Hunter has just enough money to travel to Europe to visit Semonin, but asks his friend whether his travel plans are realistic, ''...For god's sake, give me the truth...'' He writes that Mexico or South American might actually be a better options for him, and closes mentioning attending a wrestling match and drinking with mutual friends but ''...otherwise, pain...'' Signed ''H'', two page letter on one sheet measures 5.5'' x 8.5''. Near fine condition.
