Helen Keller letter signed to the Tuskegee Institute, thanking them for a donation to the American Foundation for the Blind. Dated 8 March 1947, Keller writes on her personal Arcan Ridge stationery, in part, ''...If earthly words were like Heavenly speech - music, light and fragrance, I could more fittingly thank you for an exquisite loving-kindness to the captives of the dark. As it is, tears are the only way I can express my emotion. If I might have you within reach to put my arms around you, there would be a sweet communion between us indeed. / While my own work is confined to the handicapped, the I that is free in all spheres is exceedingly with you and your brave co-workers...the Tuskegee Institute undertaken by a race for whom, as your friend so truly says, 'it is not easy to have money to contribute or to advance.' Having loved the colored folk since my childhood, I still suffer with them, but am unwaveringly confident of their ultimate arrival among the free peoples of earth...[signed] Helen Keller''. Two page letter on two sheets measures 7.25'' x 10.5''. With original mailing envelope. Near fine condition.
