Ira Hayes autograph letter signed from Sasebo, Japan in late 1945 as he waits to go back home, following the successful conclusion of WWII. The rarest of the Iwo Jima flag raisers, Hayes writes to his parents and brothers in full, ''Well folks we are at Sasebo again. Standing by to go back. We would have left 2 days ago on a [sic] aircraft carrier. But some darn office clerks fouled up the sailing roster. And it had to be made all over again. And the 'flat top' left with out us. We are to leave today or tomorrow. Been here for 4 days now. I just wrote to Leonard & told him. All my mail will be sent to you. So that means I won't send another letter till I get home. Well I can't say much now so I'll close here now. I'll write to you when ever I get time to. Remember to not write, I'll do the writing. Your loving Son & Brother / Ira H. Hayes''. Two page letter on two sheets measures 5'' x 7.75''. Very good to near fine condition.
