Datelined Harford, Connecticut, 14 September 1883, Stowe writes to an unnamed man, who inquired as to whether the characters in the novel were based on actual individuals. Stowe writes, ''...the characters in Uncle Tom's Cabin...Eva is wholly ideal - the other characters, tho suggested by real persons, none of them embody a real history of anyone in particular...HB Stowe''.
