Thomas Gage, British Commander in North America, autograph letter signed, dated 4 June 1784. Gage's actions against patriot militias sparked the Battles of Lexington and Concord, initiating the Revolutionary War. He writes in the third person, ''Gen'l Gage presents his compliments to Mr. Blackburn and acquaints him that on his return to town he received his note of the 2nd which he carried to the trustees...'' Gage was replaced by General William Howe in 1775 after his marginal victory at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Letter measuring 7.25'' x 9'' has paper loss at bottom costing portions of about six words of text. Expertly silked on both sides and inlaid. Overall very good condition.
