First U.S. edition, in original boards, of Herman Melville's ''Moby Dick''. New York: Harper & Bros., 1851. In publisher's original brown cloth, lettered in gilt, with burnt-red endpapers. Publisher's circular brand blindstamped on front and rear covers. Measures 5.5'' x 7.75''. In good plus condition, with partially separated rear hinge, discoloration to boards and cloth starting to separate from spine. Internally, foxing throughout, some dampstaining along lower edge of first 250pp., and previous owner's name stamped to front free endpaper. Overall still a solid copy. This edition is extremely rare, as nearly all of 3,000 copies were destroyed in a warehouse fire. Housed in a custom brown clamshell box.
