Olympic relay torch used in the 2002 Winter Olympics. The Torch Relay tradition began in 1928 and transports a spark from the parent flame in Olympia, Greece to the host city, in this case Salt Lake City, in time for the opening ceremonies. The torch was designed by Axiom Design and is meant to represent an icicle. The top section is made of glass, which the Olympic flame burned within, echoing the 2002 Olympic theme ''light the fire within.'' Inside the glass in a geometric copper structure which helped hold the flame. The center section is made of silver and finished to look worn, while the bottom section is made of highly polished silver. The torch bears the Salt Lake City logo with the Olympic rings beneath it, the motto of the games on the silver bottom, ''light the fire within'' and the Roman numerals XIX and ''SALT LAKE CITY 2002'' on the copper top. Measures 33'' and weighs 2.3 pounds. Glass top is missing, wear from use on worn silver section, otherwise near fine condition.
