Renowned portrait artist Nicholas Volpe charcoal sketch of Bing Crosby from his starring role in ''Going My Way'', for which he won the Best Actor Oscar in 1944. Volpe was given a lifetime commission by the Motion Picture Academy to sketch portraits of the Oscar winners for Best Actor and Actress every year, which were then displayed in the famous Brown Derby restaurant in Los Angeles. It was said that you hadn't made it in Hollywood until Volpe drew your portrait. This original portrait of Crosby is the singular sketch by Volpe from his performance in ''Going My Way'', commissioned by the Academy. Signed ''Volpe / '45'' at lower right. Matted and displayed in its original gold frame with small white placard reading ''Bing Crosby / 1944 / 'Going My Way' / Paramount'' over a depiction of the Oscar trophy. Measures 20.5'' x 24.75''. Chipping to frame and some discoloration to lower portion of mat, otherwise near fine.
